Holly looked down, the half-eaten gingerbread man still in her fingers. Looking up, she was about to tell her grandmother that she’d missed these delicious treats but Ivy was gone and she was alone.

The sound of a choir singing ‘O’ Holy Night’ drifted into the kitchen as tears streamed down her cheeks. Ivy was gone.

Holly closed her eyes and listened to the music.

Waking up on the sofa, she saw through tear-filled eyes that her dad was dozing in his armchair, the radio still playing, his paper laid gently over his chest. It really had been a dream. Holly’s heart sank as she realised that Granny Ivy wouldn’t be in the kitchen if she rushed back in there.

Quietly pulling herself off her parent’s sofa she headed to the kitchen to check on her Christmas cake, desperately hoping that she was still dreaming.

She wasn’t. The kitchen was empty, the timer she’d set beeping as she walked in. Holly sighed. It had all felt so real.

She retrieved her bake from the oven and carefully placed it on the worktop.

Taking a skewer from the drawer, she checked to see if the cake was ready. It was.

As always, Granny Ivy’s directions were perfect.
